Arizona Day Trips: Part 1 – Three Incredible Adventures Worth the Drive from Phoenix
Arizona is one of the most geographically diverse states in the country. Within just a few hours of Phoenix, you can explore lush botanical gardens, stand atop towering forested cliffs, and wander through a historic mountainside mining town. That's why I'm excited to launch a new series dedicated to helping you discover more of Arizona, one day trip at a time.

In Part 1, we're visiting three destinations that showcase just how much variety Arizona has to offer: Boyce Thompson Arboretum, the Mogollon Rim, and Jerome.
Boyce Thompson Arboretum

Located in the town of Superior, approximately one hour east of Phoenix, Boyce Thompson Arboretum is Arizona's oldest and largest botanical garden (Boyce Thompson Arboretum, n.d.). Nestled against the backdrop of rugged desert mountains, this living museum is home to thousands of plants from deserts around the world.
Visitors can stroll through miles of scenic trails lined with towering saguaros, colorful wildflowers, desert trees, and rare plant collections. The arboretum offers an opportunity to experience the beauty of the Sonoran Desert while learning about ecosystems from across the globe.
Whether you're a photographer, hiker, gardener, or simply someone looking for a peaceful escape, Boyce Thompson Arboretum is one of Arizona's most rewarding day trips.
The Mogollon Rim

Few places surprise first-time visitors quite like the Mogollon Rim. Located approximately two to three hours north of Phoenix, this dramatic escarpment stretches for roughly 200 miles across Arizona and marks the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau (United States Forest Service, n.d.).
The transition is remarkable. As you leave the desert behind, the landscape transforms into cool pine forests, mountain lakes, and expansive overlooks. Some viewpoints offer stunning views from cliffs rising nearly 2,000 feet above the terrain below.
The Mogollon Rim is a favorite destination for hiking, camping, fishing, wildlife viewing, and escaping Arizona's summer heat. During warmer months, temperatures can be significantly cooler than Phoenix, making it an ideal destination for a refreshing day trip.
Jerome

Perched on the side of Cleopatra Hill between Prescott and Sedona, Jerome is one of Arizona's most fascinating historic towns. Approximately two hours north of Phoenix, Jerome began as a booming copper mining community before experiencing a dramatic decline that nearly turned it into a ghost town (Arizona State Parks & Trails, n.d.).
Today, Jerome has reinvented itself as one of Arizona's most unique destinations. Visitors can explore historic buildings, browse art galleries and local shops, enjoy scenic overlooks, and learn about the town's colorful mining history.
Walking through Jerome feels like stepping back in time. Narrow streets cling to the mountainside, historic structures overlook the Verde Valley, and nearly every corner offers a new story waiting to be discovered.
